Bridge Building

We have been learning about forces and how they help shape the sort of bridges that we build. 

We learned that there are three main types of bridge design; beam, truss and suspension.  

Using this knowledge we designed and built our own bridges.  

Miss Fletcher set the challenge that our bridges had to be 30 cm long and strong enough to hold an object.  

In my group there was Mikayla and Olivia.  

We used egg cartons cardboard ice block sticks paper towels to build our bridge.  Here is a photo of our truss bridge.  

What I like best about our bridge is how we drew the road.  

Speeches

For the last two weeks we have been working on writing speeches. 

My topic was on Kauri Dieback.

We had to present them in front of our class.

Here is my speech. Why we need to stop Kauri Dieback

Have you ever thought about the impact that Kauri dieback is having on our forests?  Well I have and it is a terrible disease. Kauri dieback is a disease that can spread from tree to tree in only 7 sleeps. I believe we need to stop this terrible disease from spreading and here is why?

Firstly the Kauri dieback disease can spread quickly through Kauri tree forests by the touch of a footprint. This disease kills the trees. People need to stop and clean their shoes and gear before entering walking tracks to stop the disease reaching the trees.

Secondly Kauri dieback can have a huge impact on forests. If Kauri dieback spreads to Tane Mahuta in the Waipoua forest, many other trees could be destroyed because Tane Mahuta’s roots hold up lots of trees. It would be so sad to see this happen to such an important part of New Zealand and Maori History.

Finally we need stop Kauri dieback because Kauri trees are native to New Zealand and native birds live in them. If the disease kills off all our Kauri trees there will be no homes for our wonderful native birds.

Kauris are endangered because of kauri dieback but if everyone helps out I believe we can stop it from spreading. That is why we need to stop Kauri Dieback.

Environmental Writing

We sketched our bean plants that we grew in class. We then wrote words around the outside to describe the bean plant. We had to use these words to write a piece of descriptive writing. We then cut out our picture and glued it on to your writing. Here is my writing.

Equipment you will need

*Hula hoop

*Court

*2 Teams

Instructions and Rules

First you set up the hula hoops.

Second you will need to get into teams of 2.

Theird, one person from each team would step into the first hulahoop they see and one person willl say go, they would both jump to the first cuple hoops they see and 2 feet in the hulahoop and keep on doing the same thing!

When you meet up you player from the other team you play paper scissers rock who ever wins keeps on going and the person who loses goes back to the end of the line at there team.

The next person in the line starts to do the same once they meet they do the same.

If the other team gets all the way to the last hoop they get a point.

Christmas Poem

First we sketched a picture of a Christmas tree. Then we thought about things that came to your mind, about things that you do at Christmas.

Ingredients you need…

*Bowls Of Mud

*Bits Of Seaweed

*5 Eyeballs

*9 Old Shoes

*2 Leaves

Equipment you will need

*Bowl

*Masher

*Mixer

Method

First get 2 bowls of mud mix until soft.

Then get 12 bits of seaweed and mash until lumpy.

Then put in 5 eyeballs, 3 old shoes, 3 leaves mix until boiling.

Cook for 1 hour and 20 min.

My Hot Air Balloon

This week we have used a picture as motivation for our writing. We had a story starter and then we
had to carry on the story. What I like about my writing is that I am using fullstops and capital letters.

I need to improve on making sure it is making senes.
We also made a google draw showing the things that we would take with us in on the balloon

Map, cheese, donut, bucket, pillow, blanket, first aid kit,

toothbrush, green apple, red apple all the things. I feel worried and a

bit excited because I have never been in one before.  Also nervous

that I might fall out and that I might get cloud sick from the clouds.

The clouds looked as soft as a teddy bear. I heard the clouds going

puff, puff. I saw the flames. I saw them popping up like grass coming out.
We were all going around the humongous world down below us.
I took my mum and dad with me. I looked down I could see the tiny little world, it
was so small all the people looked like tiny specks of of dark black ants.
I couldn’t quite see my amazing house. "Good night," I said, but before
I could get to sleep I hear my mum and dad playing rock, paper, scissors.
Once they finished I quickly tucked myself in bed. 15 minutes later I heard fart noises,
I opened up my eyes. Dad you're farting, I started laughing hard out.
I was shocked just to hear my dad say, “we have made it." "Yay,” we all said.
We couldn’t see any hot air ballons …………
”WE HAVE MADE IT WE’VE WON YAY!” we all said.

As part of our writing programme we have been doing environmental writing. We had to sketch an object and as we were sketching we wrote down thoughts that we had. Then we wrote our thoughts down  as a poem. We cut out the sketch and added this to our writing.
